My experience on doing side projects/side hustles

Have you done any additional work apart from your course work during your undergraduate in college? Or have you done any work outside of your full-time job to enhance your skills? I am sharing what I did during my college days, job search and after getting a job.

During college days

During my college days, apart from attending classes, I had involved in doing research work and published two research papers. During this work, I have learnt how to use Raspberry Pi with which I learned to use Linux based environment that’s helping in my current work to test the software under Linux Operating system. I also learnt about a software called MATLAB through which I did research work related to image processing. Since I have learnt some image processing concepts, it was helpful for me during automation when validating the images. This research work helped me to get job in a startup company as well as in Siemens.

During Job search

During my job search, I had struggled to get a job in campus placements. Till getting a full-time job, I was working as a freelancer, creating questions for competitive exams like JEE Mains and NEET for Physics, and GATE exams for Mechanical engineers. From this freelancing experience, I have learnt to avoid Plagiarism and write questions by thinking out of the box. It had an impact on me till now when writing articles and helps me to identify some bugs in the software related to error messages and warnings. This experience helped me to get selected for a digital marketing company but rejected that offer due to some reasons.

Apart from the full-time job

Apart from my full-time job, I spent some extra time learning about software testing. In this article “My Journey as a Software Tester“, I have shared my learning experience as a software tester. Apart from this, I have started attending software testing conferences, especially from conferences organized by The Test Tribe Community.

Attending conferences gave me a lot of ideas that I have implemented in my current work and received good outcomes from those ideas. Also, I took several courses, workshops and participated in a testing hackathon. I have also delivered a guest lecture through an online platform on Embedded Systems Software Testing for IFM company in Pune.

So to my friends, I would like to convey a message that if you want to be successful in your career, you need to step out from your comfort zone and start doing your side projects or side hustles. It will open you to a lot of career opportunities.

Start following your passion and excel in your career

Thanks to Rahul Parwal for suggesting an idea to write about this.
